AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #4 – MARVEL COMICS – (W) Dan Slott (A) Giuseppe Camuncoli

SHIELD make their big push against the Zodiac this issue, their forces poised and ready to strike worldwide, except for Spidey, who nips off over to Africa to save Aunt May. Slott covers the whole ‘why the heck is she in Africa’ deal, but it still seems a little out of the blue. Elements of this issue worked for me, Spider-Man against the ‘War Goblins’ was a good ride and I’m REALLY liking the Zodiac, but it’s just got such an Ironman/Batman feel to the book that it’s lost some charm. It’s also getting a little too complex with Slott’s finger in many pies, a mysterious figure visits Dr Connors in jail and makes some wildly extravagant promises, I like the Lizard and his progression over the last couple of years, but it’s one more thing I need to keep track of in my head. This issue was good, not great, and I’m still unsure about the new direction as a whole.
